Eating Healthy Foods, Which Food is Healthy

Eating healthy food means making healthy eating choices in what you eat at all times, whether for regular meals or snacks. Eating healthy food also means having a balance and varied diet that are low in fat and sugar and high in carbohydrates, coming from whole grains, vegetables, legumes and fruits. Foods high in protein such as lean meat, poultry and fish are also healthy eating choices.

Eating healthy foods does not mean giving up ice cream, cake or pizza it only means eating less of it and at the same time choosing those that are low in sugar and low in fat. Eating your low- fat pizza and low-sugar cake or ice cream with milk or juice rather than soda or eating fruits rather than cookies for snacks is eating healthy foods. Here are some examples of healthy meals and snack choices to ensure that you are eating healthy foods:
Healthy foods are:

• Vegetables such as artichokes, broccoli, spinach, bok choy or Chinese cabbage, water cress, squash

• Fresh fruits such as avocado, apricot, cantaloupe, raspberries,

• Dried fruits such as figs and raisins

• Lean meat, chicken or turkey

• Whole wheat bread, oatmeal and other whole grains

• Nuts and legumes such as lentil, peanuts, pinto beans

• Oily ocean fish such as tuna, salmon and mackerel

• Lean beef or bison

• Yogurt and fat-free or low-fat cheese

• Cottage cheese

• Skim milk

Eating healthy foods also mean preparing food the healthy way; broil, steam and boil are the healthier way to prepare food. If food has to be fried, use oil with low trans fat such as canola oil or even olive oil. It also does not mean a drastic change in one’s eating habits. A gradual shift to eating healthy foods will be more pleasurable and beneficial to the body.
